Processors for laptops are mainly made by Intel and AMD, there are also minor makers such as Transmeta, Via etc.
Let's start with the Intel processors.
Intel Pentium 3
Truely low voltage mobile processors from Intel began with the Pentium 3 and Pentium 3-M series.
Early P3 processors range from 450MHz to 800MHz
Late P3-Mobile processors use the updated Tualatin core with a large L2 cache which goes up to 1.13GHz.
Intel Pentium 4-M
When the Intel Netburst Architecture was introduced and the Pentium 4 was launch, early Pentium 4-M processors range from 1.6GHz to 2.2GHz
There were also full blown desktop chips with higher power consumption introduced into mobile computing for desktop replacement machines.
These ran at speeds of 2.8GHz to the only 3.06GHz Hyper-Threading enabled processor.
Intel Pentium M
Intel went back to the drawing board and designed the Pentium M processor. With the strengths of the Pentium 3 core and the Netburst Architecture of the Pentium 4 core, the Pentium M processor was born.
Intel Centrino
Intel Centrino is a marketing label for the new mobile processor family which comprises 3 items:
- Intel Pentium M CPU
- Intel i855 and later chipset
- Intel 2100 802.11b and later wireless LAN card
With these 3 items, users are assured of low power consumption and seamless integration between all 3 components. |
